Introduction to Algebra

Algebra is the easiest form of math once you get the hang of it. There are 3 main parts:

  • Solving equation
  • Graphing equations
  • Translating words into math
Once you've mastered all three, you've mastered algebra.

Solving an equation is finding the unknown value:

In the above example the unknown value is x. In the end we found it is equal to 3. To solve equations you need to learn to abide by rules that help you find the missing value.

Graphing an equation is taking the equation and representing it with a picture on the coordinate plane.

The above picture is a graph of an equation. It is fairly simple because it is a line, however they do get kind of complicated later on, when we have more complex equations.

And last but not least, we need to learn how to apply math into real life. We must learn how to take our real life problems, that we explain with words, and learn to translate them into math and numbers. An example:

A board game contains 35 total coins. There are 6 black coins, and 21 blue coins. How many coins are there of other colors?

35-6-21=x
           8=x

This example if fairly easy to turn into a solvable equation, however in the future the word problems will get more complex.

Intro to Math in General

Math. The name strikes fear into everyone that hears it. However, math is the art of explaining simple things in a complicated way. Math is like building blocks. You need to have a good foundation before you can actually build the structure. What is this foundation. Look at it this way:

Arithmetic: Learning to actually use numbers in simple operations

Algebra: Taking arithmetic and using it to solve for more complex things such as equations.

Arithmetic is the basis for algebra. Make sure your arithmetic and algebra foundations are strong, because all higher level maths rely on them.

Example of higher level math include Geometry. It deals with shapes. Trigonometry is a branch of geometry that deals with triangles. Calculus is a branch of math which involves describing motion and change. It is probably the furthest you'll ever need to go into math.

Welcome to the Math Portal

Hello everyone. I decided to start this blog because I feel for many students out there that try hard with math, but never seem to get it. Usually, it is the teacher that cause this. Hopefully with this resource, you'll learn the way I like to learn, and enjoy math. For me math is a hobby and a fun challenge. Hopefully, it becomes the same for you.

If people do not believe that mathematics is simple, it is only because they do not realize how complicated life is.  ~John Louis von Neumann

Arithmetic is where the answer is right and everything is nice and you can look out of the window and see the blue sky - or the answer is wrong and you have to start over and try again and see how it comes out this time.  ~Carl Sandburg

Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas.  ~Albert Einstein

Mathematics are well and good but nature keeps dragging us around by the nose.  ~Albert Einstein

Black holes result from God dividing the universe by zero.  ~Author Unknown

Mathematics - the unshaken Foundation of Sciences, and the plentiful Fountain of Advantage to human affairs.  ~Isaac Barrow
